Yeah, I'm not sure how much can be absolutized, but I think you are definitely on to something. The hard fact is that reconciliation involves three parties (God, you, and the other person) and each has a stake in the process.

Note also the symmetry between that Saul tried to do to the Gibeonites and what they did to his family.

After more thought, I think atonement is something we should seek if we have not already been forgiven. If we already have forgiveness for our sin, atonement isn't necessary. But a right heart will desire to atone for sins committed against others, and should seek it ("I'm sorry. What can I do to make it up to you?"). If the other party can forgive without atonement, that is good for them, but the one who sinned should not expect it.

Kevin! Just wanted to say I really like what you're doing on this site. Good stuff. Also, send me your current e-mail address and phone number. I have apparently lost a lot of friend's contact info through getting a new phone.

This passage might give you some addition insight into the relationship between God's "name" and His "glory".

http://2transform.us/2008/09/10/lead-a3-gods-character/

Also, I think you actually want to finish by the end of Lent, which is Palm Sunday. Not sure I should tell you, but targeting Easter would give you seven more days of slop to play with. :-)

---
P.S. Do I think you can do it? No. :-) But Christ in you can...

This is a tough lesson. Thank you for passing along such a good reminder. I think I'm going to read through the book again too.

Another great post, Kevin. I can certainly identify with being frustrated with "life" -- I felt that way for much of mine. Being married (and now a parent) helps; now I just long for sleep, rather than death. :-)

More seriously, I think the answer is to cultivate an appropriate "thirst for glory" -- rather than for comfort. Something I touched upon in my last LEAD! lesson:

Look forward to talking with you soon.
